First off,
we are not "geeks" or "nerds" or "dorks" or anything
else gimmicky or insulting. We are real people. We do not
come to your house dressed up in a tie and white shirt,
pocket protector, name badge, cartoonish painted car, etc.
We're just regular looking people. Personally, I would be
insulted to be called, or even considered anything else.
But besides
that, the first thing you would notice that's different is
right off the bat--personality. This isn't our "job." We
actually enjoy what we're doing. Plus, we're not beat down
by corporate "numbers people" who think they have to keep
telling us to increase our sales in order to make a buck for
the company. No, we just do our job and we do it well.
Which brings
me to the biggest point--we know what we're doing. We don't
need to depend on a corporate-issued CD with the latest
industry tools to do our job. WE are the ones that use them,
WE are the ones that select them, WE know what works.
We know how to fix a computer. I mean, sure we still
run some of the same programs, but the biggest difference is
we don't just stop there. We don't depend on a CD that the
company has made for us that has special scripts to "dumb
down" something in order for to simply click "yes" or "no"
through a few questions, we actually USE the software.
Plus, what
happens when their corporate issued CD doesn't work? What if
it doesn't fix the problem? Oops! Guess you really DO need
experience in these cases. Unfortunately, the majority of
GeekSquad agents only have their gimmicky garb to make them
seem like know anything. The sad part is, because of the
huge financial corporate backing, most people think they are
the only ones to turn to. We aim to change that. :-)
