Why do we charge flat rates instead of hourly?

About 95% of all our service calls are to remove spyware and viruses. Doing this the right way may take several different programs to remove them all and to remove them properly. These scans can take as little as 5 minutes but usually upwards of 30-45 minutes if not more. Sometimes we may even have to use a special boot-CD (different from a Windows installation CD) in order to prevent the viruses from starting when Windows starts so our software can remove the infections.

Imagine you're paying someone by the hour to try and remove a difficult virus or a Rootkit from your computer and they don't have much experience. All they know to do is try to install and run a few programs given to them by their company. But when they don't have the experience to know what files to look for, or where in the Registry to find where these files may be launching from then the only thing they know to do is to "try" resetting your computer back to a few days ago before you got the virus, or to reinstall Windows. If they suggest either of those, simply thank them for their time and ask them to leave because that's a sure fire way to know that they don't have a clue what they're doing or the knowledge / experience / know-how to do the job right and they're just hoping and praying that the software does it all for them.

Unfortunately, by the time some of my customers get to me, it's after either they have tried to fix it themselves or they've paid someone a lot of money to "try" and fix it, only to have failed miserably. It's all too common. So now that they've wasted 2-3 hours of your time and you're no closer to having your computer fixed than before you called them, now they want to take MORE time to backup your files (if they even suggest that) and reinstall Windows. So how much will that cost you with their hourly charges on top of what they've already failed at? Or if they're not hourly and they charge flat rates (like GeekSquad does) then they will probably stack the charges for this new service on top of their already failed attempt. So if you want to know how much that will cost you, take a look at our rate comparison page to see what those so-called, self-proclaimed "geeks" charge, as well as other popular local companies.

So with Jweather.com Computer Services we feel that flat rates work much better for our customers. We can tell you up front how much our services will be. No worrying about how long it will take and how much it will cost, or perhaps (even worse) someone with a lack of experience is taking a lot longer to do the job because they don't know what they're doing. Even if it takes us 4-5 hours (or more) to get the job done right, you still pay the same rate we quoted you.

In some cases, we may have to adjust our rates. For example, if we initially quote $135 (over the phone or email) to remove spyware and/or viruses, but when we get the system it won't boot into Windows, then the rate may be upwards of $200 to do a complete re-install of the operating system and bring the system back to a stable state. We will let you know ahead of time if this is necessary rather than doing the work and not giving you the choice.
